The Border Closure has become ridiculous and unbearable for our business. As a Canadian citizen born and raised in White Rock, I - Alanna - am disgusted and dismayed that the spirit and covenant of the symbolic Peace Arch so proudly displayed in our joint International Park has been broken... the words within it proudly read "May these gates NEVER be closed." Yes, we are taking the Covid virus extremely seriously and deeply feel for those who have lost loved ones. Nonetheless, we feel we have lost our liberty friends. We are not being able to make our own decisions in these supposed FREE countries. I am heart broken and anxious for our respective futures.
The truth is that there is no end in sight to the border closure. Why would there be? Canadian funds are staying in Canada thus generating much more revenue in GST and gas taxes, which the country so desperately needs right now after the insane levels of provincial and federal spending. We’re no better here. We’ve spent ourselves into insurmountable debt in WA State, not to mention federally. Forcing businesses to close has cut us all off at our economic knees. This Covid scare has been a ride, that’s for sure. Even our family was on board with the initial 2 week shut down since the virus was so unknown and apparently so deadly. Then, our freedoms began to erode.
We had a customer recently come across the border to retrieve his parcels from our business. He requested a locker and came across at night. He recorded the entire trip as he was only across for a matter of minutes. He crossed the border, drove by himself to our location which is about 30 seconds away, went into our empty building and retrieved his parcels, then immediately went back into his vehicle and back to the Canadian border. He was very quick, was only a few meters into the USA, and had zero contact with anyone. He showed his video to the Canadian border officials, and guess what?? He still had to quarantine for 14 days… ??????? Why????? We are now beyond the point where this makes sense or is about public safety. Why are they doing this?? I’m not necessarily of the conspiracy theory group, but why are both of our governments so comfortable with all of this control at such detriment to our once economically strong countries?? We all need to start asking some tough questions. Again, I am disgusted and dismayed. My heart is broken. A quick trip to Peace Arch Park will show you many more people who are also struggling with this unbelievable affront to our liberties. And yes, despite rumors and postulations, the US side of Peace Arch Park is still open to both American and Canadian residents. You do not have to quarantine after you visit there and mask wearing is also not enforced. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to still see people with tents enjoying their day there as well. The last remaining stand for liberty.
All this to say – At the Border Mail – has endured the last 10 months with no income. We can no longer operate hoping the border will reopen, when it clearly will not. Our monthly utilities and mortgage payment, along with other operating expenses, are no longer reasonable for us to sustain at this point. We will be closing for parcel receiving and picking up the middle of next month. Monday, February 15th will be our last day on site. We are going to strip down all of our expenditures and hope to ride out the remaining time by fiscally tightening everything up. WE WILL NOT GET RID OF YOUR PARCELS!! We are committed to upholding our end of the agreement with you and giving you ample time to retrieve your parcels once the border does re-open. Please DO NOT SHIP ANY FURTHER PARCELS TO US at this time. After Monday, February 15th, they will be returned to sender. This gives an additional 4 weeks from this date for any straggling parcels to be received. We will shut down operations at that time until the border re-opens. You have the next 4 weeks to reach out to us to help you forward your items to a Canadian address via UPS, but this is extremely costly, FYI. Not only do you pay the shipping, you also need to pay all of the customs fees on each item. This is something you do yourself after we give you weights and measurements, and, if done improperly, will be returned with no reparations. You can also contact those who send you mail and either put a hold on or redirect your mail to Canada. Otherwise, your mail will be returned to sender. This may help clear out some of the junk mail for many of you! 😏
After being in business for 10 years this year, we are extremely saddened to have this turn of events impact us so drastically with there being not a thing we can do about it. Preposterous and egregious to say the least. We do not know what a re-opening will look like at this point, but we are honour-bound to make certain that we give you every opportunity to retrieve your parcels when that opportunity becomes available.
